Promoting partnership working in the NHS

HPMA Partnership Award 2019

The HPMA Excellence Awards 2019 recognise, reward and share the outstanding work of people managers across health and social care in the UK. In this the 28th year of the awards programme, the SPF was proud to once again sponsor the partnership award. The award celebrates initiatives that exemplify the benefits of partnership working between employers and trade unions to overcome challenges and develop solutions. Entries need to demonstrate evidence of partnership working from the outset and how the initiative has had a positive impact on the provision of patient care and services.

The 2019 awards ceremony was held on Thursday 6 June in Manchester, at the Hilton Hotel, Deansgate. The ceremony was as always a real celebration of the excellent work going on in human resource management across the UK, with the audience enthusiastically welcoming all award winners to the stage. Huge congratulations from the SPF to all of this year's award winners and finalists.

The 2019 SPF partnership award went to The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for their developing a people strategy in partnership initiative.

An award winning combination of positive mindsets, effective working relationships and full scale staff engagement saw trust and staff side colleagues at Hillingdon working in partnership to develop a new people strategy that addressed issues that were important to staff.

The strategy has already delivered a range of improvements for staff and patients, including a new learning management system, a succesful overseas recruitment campaign, streamlining of recruitment processes improving the experience of candidates and new starters together with a reduction in the organisation’s vacancy rate, agency spend and time taken to hire.

Our SPF judges said "We were really impressed by the clear and demonstrable partnership working from the outset at the core of this initiative. This was an ambitious project dealing with some very complex problems facing many NHS trusts. The achievements were clearly demonstrated in the entry and were backed by strong evidence of outcomes including tangible savings and improvements. The initiative shows that partnership working from the outset, developing solutions through collaboration and focusing on real strategic issues delivers substantial benefits for staff and patients. Congratulations to  Hillingdon and our other excellent finalists Birmingham and Solihull and The Christie."
