Last year 2011/12 the Social Partnership Forum (NHS Trade Unions, Department of Health and NHS Employers) worked in partnership with Strategic Health Authorities and employers to deliver the first national staff vaccination campaign against flu.
After the success of last year’s national campaign which saw healthcare worker uptake of the flu vaccine increase significantly from 35 per cent to 45 per cent, the SPF will be working in partnership with NHS Employers to deliver the 2012/13 staff vaccination campaign – flu fighter!
An independent evaluation was undertaken of the 2011/12 flu fighter campaign which involved interviewing flu leads and other NHS staff to find out what elements of the campaign were most effective:
- 98 per cent NHS organisations ran a staff flu vaccination campaign in 2011/12
- 35 per cent of the campaign users rated the campaign as ‘very effective’
- 65 per cent of flu leads who used flu fighter said they found their campaign easier to implement in 2011/12 than in previous years.
The results of the evaluation have lead to positive changes for this year’s flu fighter campaign: there will be a stronger focus on embedding the campaign at a local level, the training of vaccinators will be a priority, and new campaign materials have been developed.
